Le faʻafanua
Daegu lies in a broad basin in southeastern South Korea, enclosed by mountains, with Palgongsan to the north and Apsan and Biseulsan to the south. On the map the urban area fills the valley floor almost completely and stops abruptly where the slopes begin, so the city appears as a dense field of streets framed by empty, rising ground.
Inside the basin, broad avenues form a clear grid, with Dalgubeol-daero running east to west as the main axis. The Sincheon stream flows north through the heart of the city to join the Geumho River, which curves along the northern districts before meeting the Nakdong River in the west. Duryu Park and its tower sit on a small hill southwest of the centre.
Daegu is known for its textile industry, its apple orchards and some of the hottest summers in Korea, a result of the enclosing basin. It hosted the 2011 World Championships in Athletics. A Daegu map poster captures the city's compact, contained form: a clear urban grid held within a ring of mountains.
A straight, channelled stream running south to north through the centre, lined with walking paths and crossed by frequent bridges, it divides the grid into east and west.
Curving across the north of the city, the Geumho forms a soft boundary between the central districts and the airport area before it joins the Nakdong.
Mountains close in on nearly all sides, and the street pattern ends sharply at their foot, giving the city a distinct outline that few large cities share.

Aisea Daegu
Daegu's shape is unusually easy to read, which makes it a satisfying print: a single valley, a stream through the middle, mountains all around. It works as a reminder of a hometown, years at university or a posting to the city, framed in plain black and white.
