Denton lies at the northern edge of the Dallas–Fort Worth region, where Interstate 35 divides into two branches, one heading to Dallas and the other to Fort Worth. On a map the highways form a clear framework around the city. Between them, the older street grid spreads out from a compact historic centre into newer neighbourhoods and open prairie.
At the heart of the city is the courthouse square, built around the Denton County Courthouse, completed in 1896. The streets around it form a tight grid of shops, music venues and restaurants.
