Ettlingen lies just south of Karlsruhe, at the point where the northern Black Forest meets the flat Upper Rhine plain. The little River Alb runs straight through the old town on its way north, so the map shows water right at the heart of the centre rather than skirting its edge.
After a devastating fire in 1689, the old town was rebuilt in the baroque style, and its compact core of lanes, squares and the large palace beside the Alb still shows that rebuilding. Around it, later districts spread out onto the plain, while wooded slopes rise to the south and east.
