Le faʻafanua
Fergana was founded in 1876 by the Russian administration as a new town near the older city of Margilan, and it was laid out to a deliberate plan. Its streets fan out from the site of the original fortress, creating a radial pattern that is unusual in Central Asia. On the map, broad avenues spread outward like spokes, crossed by arcs of streets further from the centre.
The city lies in the southern part of the Fergana Valley, the broad, fertile basin enclosed by mountain ranges and shared by Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan. Irrigation canals cross the surrounding land, and tree-lined streets give the centre a green, shaded character. Margilan, long known for its silk weaving, lies just to the north-west.
A Fergana map poster shows one of the clearest examples of nineteenth-century town planning in the region. In black and white, the radial avenues become a strong graphic motif, the curved cross streets add rhythm, and the canals and fields beyond the edge soften the geometry. The map appeals to design lovers as much as to people who grew up there.
Main avenues radiate from the former fortress area in a fan shape, a deliberate nineteenth-century layout that gives the map a strong, instantly recognisable structure.
Canals and irrigation channels run through and around the city, drawing thin, meandering lines that contrast with the straight avenues of the planned centre.
The city sits within the wide Fergana Valley, surrounded by cultivated land and neighbouring towns, which gives the wider view an open, agricultural texture.

Aisea Fergana
People from Fergana have settled across the former Soviet Union and beyond, and many keep a strong attachment to its green streets and valley summers. Its radial plan also makes a genuinely beautiful map, one that works on a wall even for those who have never visited.
Personalise the title and subtitle, perhaps with the name of a street or school, and set the coordinates line. Choose Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand, and download the files or order a printed poster on matte paper.
