Le faʻafanua
Flinders Island is the largest of the Furneaux Group, lying in eastern Bass Strait between the Victorian coast and the northeast tip of Tasmania. It is a substantial island, more than sixty kilometres long, and its outline is broad and irregular, with long beaches, rocky points and scattered offshore islands. The western side is mountainous, while the east is low and dotted with coastal lagoons.
The granite peaks of the Strzelecki range rise in the southwest of the island within Strzelecki National Park, and Mount Strzelecki is its most visible landmark. Whitemark, the main town, sits on the west coast, while Lady Barron in the south serves as the port. A sparse network of roads links farms, beaches and the two towns across open country.
The island also carries a difficult history. In the 1830s Aboriginal Tasmanians were relocated to a settlement at Wybalenna on the west coast, where many died; the site has since been returned to Aboriginal ownership. A Flinders Island map poster presents the whole island as it is today: mountains, lagoons and a quiet web of roads shaped by distance.
The granite summits in the southwest form the highest ground on the island and give its western side a rugged, compressed appearance on the map.
A chain of shallow coastal lagoons lines the low eastern shore, creating soft, irregular shapes between dunes, farmland and the open sea.
Numerous smaller islands of the Furneaux Group surround Flinders, especially to the south, so the island sits within a wider scatter of land and water.

Aisea Flinders Island
Flinders Island draws walkers, fishers and people looking for space, and many residents have family ties going back generations. A map of it is a grounded, uncluttered reminder of a place where the land still outweighs the roads.
