Le faʻafanua
Flying Fish Cove is the main settlement of Christmas Island, an Australian external territory in the Indian Ocean south of Java. It lies on the island's northern coast, where one of the few sheltered anchorages allowed ships to land, and takes its name from the British survey ship Flying Fish, which called here in the late nineteenth century. The jetty and most of the island's services are gathered here.
The map shows a settlement shaped by terrain rather than by plan. Houses and roads cling to a thin coastal strip, then switch back up the escarpment toward the plateau, where later housing and the old phosphate workings spread out. The cove itself is a small bite out of an otherwise straight, cliff-bound coast, and the sea fills much of the frame.
Life here has long been tied to phosphate mining, which drew workers from China, Malaya and Singapore and shaped the island's mixed community. The island is also known for the yearly migration of red crabs from forest to sea. A Flying Fish Cove map poster holds that small shoreline settlement at its heart, with roads climbing inland like threads toward the interior.
A small indentation in the northern coastline provides the island's main landing point, visible on the map as a gentle curve breaking an otherwise steep, straight shore.
The settlement occupies a narrow strip between sea and cliff, so its streets run mostly parallel to the water before the terrain forces them to turn.
Winding roads climb the escarpment from the cove to the higher terraces and the interior plateau, drawing the clearest lines of movement on the map.
