Le faʻafanua
Franconville lies in the Val-d'Oise, less than twenty kilometres north-west of central Paris, one of the towns that grew along the railway lines leading out of the capital. Its map shows a characteristic Île-de-France mix: an older village core with irregular streets, surrounded by twentieth-century housing, quiet cul-de-sacs and tidy residential blocks spreading across gently rising ground.
The railway crosses the town and gives it a strong linear feature, with the station acting as a hinge between neighbourhoods. On one side the terrain lifts toward the wooded Buttes du Parisis, a line of hills with views back over the Paris basin. Parks, school grounds and sports fields break the residential fabric into smaller, readable pieces.
A Franconville map poster shows suburban life in fine detail: the curl of residential lanes, the older streets at the centre, the rail line slicing cleanly through, and the green patches of woodland at the edge. It is an intimate kind of map, less about monuments than about the everyday routes of people who actually live there.
The oldest part of town keeps an irregular pattern of short, angled streets, a trace of the rural village that existed long before the suburbs arrived.
A railway line toward Paris crosses Franconville in a long, straight stroke, dividing the town and anchoring the neighbourhoods around its station.
Wooded hills rise at the edge of the town, their forest paths and open slopes forming a quieter, greener zone against the dense residential streets.
