Genhe sits deep in the Greater Khingan Range in the far north of Inner Mongolia, where the Genhe River winds through a valley and the town follows it. From above, the built area is a narrow band of streets along the water. Forested slopes close in on both sides, so the settled ground reads as a clear shape inside a much larger green.
The town is often described as one of the coldest places in China. Winters are long, and the ground stays frozen for much of the year.
