Le faʻafanua
Hamilton has two levels, and the map shows them clearly. The lower city spreads along the western end of Lake Ontario around Hamilton Harbour, with a dense grid of streets reaching to the water. Behind it rises the Niagara Escarpment, known locally as the Mountain, and on top of that ridge a second, newer grid continues south. Only a few access roads climb the slope between the two.
The harbour explains much of the city's past. Steelmaking on the industrial shoreline made Hamilton one of Canada's manufacturing centres, and the long piers and slips still make the bayfront one of the most intricate parts of the map. To the west, the Royal Botanical Gardens and the McMaster University campus break the street pattern into green space and winding paths.
A Hamilton map poster turns that division into a strong composition. The escarpment appears as a band of wooded slope where the grid pauses before it starts again, the harbour cuts a wide shape into the top of the frame, and the parallel corridors of King and Main Streets run east to west through the lower city.

A nearly enclosed bay at the western tip of Lake Ontario, lined with industrial piers on one side and parkland on the other. It gives the poster its dominant shape.
Two long parallel streets carry traffic east and west through the lower city. They form the spine of the downtown grid and are easy to trace on the finished map.
