Henderson occupies the southeastern corner of the Las Vegas Valley, and its map is shaped by a pattern common across the American Southwest: long arterial roads on a broad grid, filled in with looping residential streets and cul-de-sacs. At the edges the development stops abruptly where the desert and the mountain slopes begin, leaving crisp boundaries rather than a gradual fade.
The city began during the Second World War as a settlement for workers at the Basic Magnesium plant, which supplied metal for the war effort. Later decades brought large master-planned communities such as Green Valley and Anthem, and their gently winding street plans give much of Henderson its distinctive, almost organic line work.
Freeways frame the city. The 215 beltway sweeps through its western and central districts, and Interstate 11 heads southeast toward Boulder City and Hoover Dam.
