Le faʻafanua
Himeji lies in western Hyōgo Prefecture, on the coastal plain between the Seto Inland Sea and the hills of the Chūgoku region. From above, the city is organised around a single, clear axis: Ōtemae-dōri, a wide avenue that runs north from Himeji Station straight toward the castle. The streets on either side follow a regular grid, largely rebuilt after the city was heavily damaged in 1945.
Himeji Castle, the largest castle in Japan and one of the few with its original keep, occupies a hill at the top of the avenue and has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1993. On the map its grounds form a distinct shape, ringed by moats and green spaces that interrupt the grid. Its white walls earned it the name White Heron Castle, or Shirasagi-jō.
South of the centre, the city extends to the coast, where industrial zones, ports and reclaimed land meet the Inland Sea. To the north-west rises Mount Shosha, with the temple complex of Engyō-ji on its summit. A Himeji map poster brings these elements together, from the formal castle district to the working shoreline and the hills beyond.
The broad avenue from the station to the castle is a straight, deliberate line through the centre, and one of the clearest urban axes in any Japanese city.
Moats and walls around Himeji Castle create layered rectangles and curves, a nested shape that stands out against the surrounding modern grid.
To the south, piers, industrial blocks and reclaimed land form a straight-edged coastline, a firm boundary along the bottom of the map.

Aisea Himeji
Himeji is a city many travellers visit for a single day and remember for years. The map suits anyone who has walked up Ōtemae-dōri to the castle gate, and anyone with family roots in Hyōgo.
Personalise the title and subtitle, perhaps with the date of your visit, and keep the coordinates for accuracy. The Paper and Sand styles recall traditional Japanese prints, while Classic black & white, Noir and Blueprint keep the geometry crisp.
