Le faʻafanua
Ibaraki is a city in the northern part of Osaka Prefecture, not to be confused with Ibaraki Prefecture northeast of Tokyo. It stretches in a long north-south strip: the southern half lies on the flat, densely built plain between Osaka and Kyoto, while the northern half rises into the wooded Hokusetsu hills, with villages and farmland in the valleys.
On the plain, the map is crossed by some of Japan's busiest transport corridors. Railway lines, the Tokaido Shinkansen and the Meishin Expressway run roughly parallel through the city, cutting clean lines across a fine mesh of residential streets. The Ai River flows down from the hills through the centre, and planned housing districts climb onto the lower slopes.
Architecture lovers know Ibaraki as the home of Tadao Ando's Church of the Light, a small concrete chapel in a quiet residential area. An Ibaraki map poster shows a different side of that same restraint: dense streets, straight rail lines and the sudden, almost empty space of the hills, a composition split cleanly between city and mountain.
Parallel rail lines and the expressway cross the southern plain in long straight strokes, giving the map a strong diagonal structure against the fine grain of the streets.
Descending from the northern hills, the river runs through the city toward the plain, a thin winding line that connects the two halves of Ibaraki on the map.
The northern districts are mostly forest and narrow valleys, where only a few roads follow the streams. This quiet upper half balances the density below.

Aisea Ibaraki
Ibaraki is home to many people who commute to Osaka or Kyoto, and to students and staff at nearby universities. Its map records daily life in the Kansai corridor, and the architectural association makes it a thoughtful choice for design lovers.
