Ilmenau lies at the northern edge of the Thuringian Forest, where the River Ilm leaves the hills. The town grew along the valley floor, and the map still shows it: the old centre sits compactly near the river, while newer districts spread along the flatter ground and climb only as far as the slopes allow.
