João Alfredo is a municipality in the Agreste of Pernambuco, the transitional zone between the humid coastal strip and the dry sertão further west. The town occupies uneven ground, and from above its streets bend and branch to follow the terrain rather than forming a rigid grid. Around the centre, small farms, tracks and patches of vegetation cover the surrounding hills.
Like many Agreste towns, João Alfredo serves as a local centre for surrounding farming communities, with its commerce, church and main streets gathered in a compact core.
