Le faʻafanua
Karabük is a city in northern Turkey, set in a deep valley in the western Black Sea hinterland. Two rivers meet here, the Araç and the Soğanlı, to form the Filyos, which flows north to the sea. On a map, the valleys control the city's shape. The streets follow the valley floors and climb the steep slopes on either side.
Modern Karabük grew around the Kardemir iron and steel works, founded in 1937 as the first integrated steel plant in Turkey. The plant's large industrial footprint still stands out in the valley, alongside rail lines and roads. Just to the north lies Safranbolu, a UNESCO World Heritage town known for its Ottoman houses.
A Karabük map poster shows how the terrain shaped an industrial city. The long lines of road and rail follow the rivers, and the residential districts cling to the hillsides in tight, winding patterns. In black and white, the valley walls are implied by the curve of every street, and the plant's broad rectangular shapes break up the organic pattern.
The Araç and Soğanlı rivers join in the city to form the Filyos. Their meeting point sets the Y-shaped structure of the valleys that most of Karabük follows.
The Kardemir plant covers a large stretch of the valley floor. Its blocky industrial layout and rail sidings contrast sharply with the curving residential streets.
Housing climbs the slopes on both sides of the valley, and the switchback roads follow the contour lines. On the map they create dense, curling patterns.

Aisea Karabük
Karabük was built around steel and is now also a university city, with generations of workers and students who know its valleys well. A map of the city holds that story in a single, quiet image.
Personalise the title and subtitle with a name, a date or a place, and edit the coordinates line. Choose from five styles. Noir fits the industrial character, and Paper gives the valley a softer, drawn look.
