Le faʻafanua
Katihar lies on the broad alluvial plain of north-eastern Bihar, a region shaped by the Ganges and its tributaries. The land is almost completely flat, so the map's lines come from human works rather than terrain. The most important of these is the railway. Katihar is a major junction, and tracks leave the town in several directions, giving the map a clear radial pattern.
Around the station and yards, the town's streets form a dense, irregular web. Markets and residential lanes pack the space between the rail lines. Toward the edges, the built area thins into villages, ponds and cultivated fields, and the regular rectangles of farmland take over. Rivers wander across this wider landscape, and their shifting channels leave curved scars and oxbows.
The railway made Katihar what it is, connecting Bihar with Bengal and the north-east of India. A Katihar map poster turns that network into the centrepiece. Converging tracks, the knot of streets around them and the open plain beyond come together in a simple, balanced composition that reads clearly in black and white.
Lines leave Katihar in several directions, and the yards and sidings near the station form the strongest, most geometric part of the town's map.
Between the tracks, narrow market lanes and residential streets form a close, irregular mesh that contrasts with the straight rail lines around it.
Beyond the town, flat fields, ponds and the curving traces of river channels spread outward, typical of the Ganges plain in this part of Bihar.
