Le faʻafanua
Kochi lies on a small coastal plain in southern Shikoku and faces the Pacific through the narrow entrance of Urado Bay. Rivers such as the Kagami wind across the plain to the bay, framing the city with water on several sides, and forested hills rise behind it to the north. From above, the centre is a compact grid around a single wooded hill.
That hill carries Kōchi Castle, one of twelve castles in Japan whose original keep survives from the Edo period. Streets spread out from its base. The Tosa Electric Railway trams, running since 1904, cross the centre east to west and north to south. The lines meet at Harimayabashi, a small red bridge made famous by a folk song.
Kochi is the home of Sakamoto Ryōma, the samurai who helped bring about the Meiji Restoration, and the birthplace of the Yosakoi dance festival held every August. South of the city, Katsurahama beach curves along the Pacific. A Kochi map poster follows the line from castle hill to open sea, with the rivers and tram lines tying the two together.

Two tram lines meet at Harimayabashi and draw a cross over the centre. One runs east to west across the plain, and the other runs north to the station and south to the port.
The bay opens to the Pacific through a narrow mouth south of the city. Katsurahama beach and its pine-covered headland sit on the seaward side.
