Le faʻafanua
Kokshetau lies in northern Kazakhstan, beside Lake Kopa, whose broad, shallow basin sits along the city's edge. From above, the lake forms a large rounded shape of open water, and the city's streets spread away from it across level steppe. Beyond the urban area, the land opens into grassland and fields, with the forested hills and lakes of the Burabay area further afield.
The city's layout reflects its Soviet-era growth, with a largely regular grid of streets, wide avenues and apartment blocks arranged in orderly districts. Parks and public squares break up the pattern, and a railway line passes through, adding a long straight stroke to the composition. Towards the edges, private houses and smaller streets create a looser texture before the land returns to open steppe.
Kokshetau is the administrative centre of its region and a gateway to the lakes and pine forests that make this part of Kazakhstan a well-known recreation area. The city's name refers to the blue-tinged hills of the region. A Kokshetau map poster captures its clear structure: orderly streets, a lake on one side and a wide horizon of steppe.
The broad lake beside the city forms the largest natural shape on the map, a smooth expanse of water that anchors the grid of streets around it.
Straight avenues and regular residential blocks give the central districts a strong, ordered structure that reads cleanly in a minimalist print, with parks and squares breaking the rhythm.
At the edges, streets fade into open grassland and fields, making the city stand out as a compact shape against the vast northern plain.
