Le faʻafanua
Luhuan, better known by its Portuguese name Coloane, is the southernmost part of Macao, and it looks nothing like the dense peninsula to the north. From above, wooded hills cover most of the land, crossed by winding roads and trails. Houses and streets are grouped in a few places, above all the old fishing village on the western shore, which faces mainland China across a narrow channel.
Coloane Village is known for the small Chapel of St. Francis Xavier on a tiled square by the water, and for its low shophouses and narrow lanes. Coloane was once a separate island. It is now joined to Taipa by the reclaimed land of Cotai, so the map shows a firm northern edge where the old coastline meets the new ground.
A Luhuan map poster is mostly about contours and coastline. Hac Sa and Cheoc Van beaches cut soft curves into the shore, reservoirs sit in the folds of the hills, and roads loop around the high ground rather than crossing it. In black and white, the island looks like a calm corner of one of the most densely populated places in the world.
The historic village runs along the western waterfront. It is a small cluster of lanes around the chapel square, facing the mainland across a narrow stretch of water.
Hac Sa and Cheoc Van form two pale crescents along the coast. They are the largest breaks in a shoreline that is otherwise mostly rocky.
Much of the interior is wooded hills with walking trails and reservoirs. This leaves large open areas on the map, so the few roads stand out clearly.
