Le faʻafanua
Malacca faces the Strait of Malacca, one of the most important shipping lanes in the world, and the city has always turned toward the water. The Melaka River curves through the historic centre on its way to the sea, and the oldest streets cluster close to its banks. Beyond them, land reclamation has pushed the coastline outward, further from the old town.
Over the centuries the port passed from the Malacca Sultanate to Portuguese, Dutch and British rule, and each left traces in the plan. St Paul's Hill rises beside the river with the ruins of a Portuguese church at its summit, and the Dutch Stadthuys stands at its foot. Across the water, narrow shophouse streets around Jonker Street run close to the river.
In 2008 the historic centre was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List, jointly with George Town in Penang. A Malacca map poster shows how compact that core is compared with the city that has grown around it. Newer roads, housing estates and reclaimed districts spread along the coast and deeper into the surrounding countryside.
The river winds through the heritage core in gentle bends under short bridges. Old shophouse streets line one bank, and the colonial square sits on the other.
A small hill beside the river, crowned by the ruins of a Portuguese-era church, appears as a rounded pocket of open space inside the dense historic streets.
Along the sea, reclaimed land extends the city outward in straight, engineered edges that contrast with the older, irregular streets behind them.

Aisea Malacca
Malacca is a place many visit once and remember for years: the river at dusk, the red colonial buildings, the walk along Jonker Street. For Malaysians with family here, it is simply home, with centuries of trade written into its streets.
