Le faʻafanua
Maran is a district in the Malaysian state of Pahang, lying in the interior between Kuantan and Temerloh. On a map the district is mostly open land, with built-up areas appearing as small clusters along the main roads rather than as a single large city. The town of Maran itself sits beside the route that links the east coast with the centre of the peninsula.
Much of the surrounding land has been developed for oil palm and rubber, including planned settlements from land development schemes, whose regular village layouts stand out against the more irregular forest edges. Rivers and streams thread through the district, and the broad Pahang River passes through it on its way to the South China Sea.
For many people Maran is a familiar stop on the long drive between Kuala Lumpur and the east coast. A Maran map poster shows it more fully: a modest town, the roads that connect it and the planted landscape stretching around it, a clear portrait of rural Pahang seen from above.
The main road toward Kuantan runs through the district as a long steady line, with the town and its junctions spaced along it, the clearest structure on the map.
Planned villages built for plantation smallholders appear as compact, regular grids set within larger agricultural land, small patches of order surrounded by oil palm.
The broad river crosses the district in wide meanders, the largest natural feature in the area and a strong curving line against the straight plantation roads.

Aisea Maran
Maran appeals to families from Pahang's settlement communities, to people working on the estates and to anyone who remembers stopping here on the way to Kuantan. It is a map of home that no ordinary souvenir shop would carry.
