Le faʻafanua
Middlesbrough grew with unusual speed. In the early nineteenth century there was little more than a farmstead here, until the Stockton and Darlington Railway was extended to the Tees in 1830 to ship coal and a new town was laid out beside the river. The discovery of ironstone in the Cleveland Hills then made it a centre of iron and steel, earning it the nickname Ironopolis.
The original planned town, north of the railway near the river, was set out as a small grid around a central square. On the map, the Tees bends around this area before widening toward its estuary, with docks and industrial land along the banks. The Transporter Bridge, opened in 1911, crosses the river nearby and remains one of the most recognisable structures in the region.
South of the railway, the town spreads outward in long terraced streets, with Albert Park forming a large green space. Beyond it, suburbs extend toward the Eston Hills and the edge of the North York Moors. A Middlesbrough map poster shows the full sequence, from river and industry to terraces and open hills.

The original 1830s town near the river was laid out as a compact grid around a market square, a small, orderly pattern still visible north of the railway.
Opened in the Victorian era, this large park lies south of the centre, a broad green shape set among the long rows of terraced streets.
