Le faʻafanua
Minamata lies in the far south of Kumamoto Prefecture on Kyushu, facing the Yatsushiro Sea, also called the Shiranui Sea. From above, the city occupies a small coastal plain where the Minamata River reaches the bay, and its streets fill the flat ground between the shoreline and steep wooded hills. The railway and the coastal road run along the edge of the plain, following the curve of the sea.
The city is known worldwide for Minamata disease, caused by mercury that a chemical factory discharged into the bay in the mid twentieth century. What happened here led to the Minamata Convention on Mercury, adopted in 2013. Part of the contaminated bay was later reclaimed, and that land is now a large waterfront park, a trace of this history that is visible on the map.
A Minamata map poster shows the city as it stands today: the river, the reclaimed shoreline, the town grid and the green hills that enclose it. For residents and people with family ties here it is a portrait of home. For others it can be a considered reminder of a place that has shaped environmental awareness.
The river flows out of the mountains and across the plain to the sea. It divides the city and draws a strong curving line through the centre of the map.
A large area of reclaimed land along the bay is now parkland. Its straight edges stand out clearly against the natural curves of the surrounding coastline.
Forested slopes rise sharply behind the city. They keep the built-up area on a narrow strip of flat land and frame the map on the landward side.
