Nanterre lies west of Paris on a broad bend of the Seine and is the prefecture of the Hauts-de-Seine department. Its map is varied rather than uniform: an old town centre with small, irregular blocks, large twentieth-century housing estates, a university campus, rail yards, and the high-rise district of La Défense reaching into its eastern side.
