Le faʻafanua
Noboribetsu stretches along the Pacific coast of southwestern Hokkaido, between Muroran and Shiraoi. The urban area is long and narrow, following the shoreline, the railway and the main coastal road. Residential districts fill the flat land between the sea and the hills, and behind them the ground rises quickly into forested volcanic terrain.
Inland from the coast is Noboribetsu Onsen, one of the best-known hot-spring resorts in Japan. Its hotels cluster in a narrow valley beside Jigokudani, or Hell Valley, a steaming volcanic crater of sulphurous vents and pale, bare ground. Nearby lies Lake Kuttara, an almost circular caldera lake surrounded by forest, which appears on the map as a clean, round shape.
A Noboribetsu map poster brings these different pieces together: the linear coastal town, the winding road climbing into the hills and the compact resort district at its end. It suits travellers who remember the steam rising over the valley. It also suits residents who know the city as a working coastal community as much as a spa destination.
The volcanic valley above the onsen town is an open, unbuilt area on the map. Forest surrounds it, and walking paths cross it near the resort streets.
This small caldera lake sits in the hills a short distance from the onsen. It is nearly round, which makes it one of the most striking shapes in the area.
The main town follows the Pacific shore in a long band. The railway and coastal road run parallel to the beach, with neighbourhoods set in rows behind them.
