Le faʻafanua
Nosy Varika lies on the east coast of Madagascar, in the Vatovavy region, on a strip of low land between the Indian Ocean and the inland lagoons. Nosy means island in Malagasy, and water is everywhere on the map: the ocean shore, river mouths, and the chain of lakes and channels running parallel to the coast. The town itself is small and loosely laid out.
This stretch of coast belongs to the Pangalanes, a long inland waterway of natural lagoons linked by canals, used for moving people and goods along the east coast. The region is humid and green, and the countryside produces rice and cash crops such as coffee. Roads are limited here, so rivers and canals remain an important way to travel.
A Nosy Varika map poster is mostly about water. The long straight line of the coast, the sinuous lagoons and the rivers winding in from the interior create an intricate pattern, with the town as a small cluster of streets among them. It is an unusual and very graphic image, far from the usual idea of a city map.
The coast runs as a long, clean line along the eastern edge of the map, a simple boundary against which the complex inland waterways stand out.
Lagoons and channels parallel to the sea form a narrow band of water behind the shore, part of the inland waterway that runs down Madagascar's east coast.
Rivers descending from the interior reach the coast nearby, their curving courses and branching mouths adding delicate lines to the landscape around the town.
