Le faʻafanua
Ô Môn sits on the southern bank of the Hậu River, the Bassac branch of the Mekong, a short way upstream of central Cần Thơ. From above, the district is defined by water: the wide river along one edge, the smaller Ô Môn river cutting inland, and a fine web of canals and ditches that divide the flat delta into narrow fields and orchard plots.
Settlement follows the waterways. Houses line the banks in thin ribbons, roads run alongside canals rather than across them, and the denser core gathers where the Ô Môn river meets the Hậu. On a map this produces a pattern quite unlike a grid city, with long parallel strands of streets and water reaching out into cultivated land.
The district is also known for the Ô Môn power centre, a cluster of thermal plants on the riverbank that forms one of the larger industrial sites in the delta. An Ô Môn map poster captures both sides of the place: the working river edge, and the quiet geometry of canals and paddies that surrounds it.
The Bassac branch of the Mekong runs along the district's edge. It is wide enough to read as a solid band of water on the poster, and it frames everything else.
Dozens of straight and gently curving canals cross the land. Each is lined with a thread of houses and lanes, which gives the map its fine, combed texture.
Open fields and fruit gardens lie between the waterways. They appear as calm, unbroken space and let the linework of the canals stand out clearly.
