For centuries Olomouc was one of the main cities of Moravia, and its historic centre is among the largest preserved in the Czech Republic. On the map, the old town sits on raised ground above the Morava. Its streets open into a chain of squares, and a band of parks around it traces the line of the former fortifications.
The Holy Trinity Column on Upper Square is a baroque monument built in the first half of the eighteenth century and is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
