Le faʻafanua
Ometepe rises from Lake Nicaragua, also called Cocibolca, as two volcanic cones linked by a low, narrow neck of land. Concepción, the northwestern cone, is active and almost perfectly symmetrical; Maderas, to the southeast, is older, forested and topped by a crater lake. From above, the island has a distinctive figure-eight outline that makes it one of the most recognisable shapes in Central America.
Roads loop around each volcano near the shore, connecting towns and villages such as Moyogalpa, the main ferry port on the west side, and Altagracia on the northeast coast. Ometepe is widely described as the largest volcanic island in a freshwater lake, and it is known for its pre-Columbian petroglyphs and for statues carved in basalt.
An Ometepe map poster is almost a diagram of volcanic geology: two circles of road wrapped around two peaks, joined by an isthmus and set in open lake water. The cones themselves remain blank, which makes the outline all the more striking. It is a strong, balanced image for a wall.
The northwestern volcano forms a near-perfect circle of land. A road loops around its base while the upper slopes are left open, drawing a clean round shape on the poster.
A low, narrow strip of land links the two volcanoes, with beaches on either side. It is the waist of the hourglass and the point where the island's two halves meet.
The southeastern cone is broader and more rugged, with fewer roads and scattered villages on its lower slopes. On the map it balances Concepción with a softer, less regular outline.

Aisea Ometepe
Ometepe leaves a vivid impression on travellers, whether they climbed a volcano, cycled the island's roads or simply watched the two cones from the ferry. Its shape is so clear that the poster works as a graphic in its own right.
