Le faʻafanua
Oroquieta is the capital of Misamis Occidental, on the northwestern coast of Mindanao facing Iligan Bay. On a map the town is a modest, orderly place: a compact centre of short blocks near the shore, with the coastal highway running along the bay and linking it with the neighbouring towns to the north and south.
The shoreline gives the city its clearest edge, a gentle curve of coast where streets meet the water. Inland, the land rises steadily towards the Mount Malindang range, whose forested slopes are protected as a natural park, and the roads thin out into farm lanes and routes climbing towards upland villages.
Small rivers run down from the hills to the bay, crossing the plain in thin winding lines. An Oroquieta map poster shows this compact structure clearly, a provincial capital held between the sea and the mountains, where the grid of the centre and the curve of the coast are easy to read even at a glance.
The town faces the calm waters of Iligan Bay, and the curving coastline forms the strongest line on the map, with streets ending at the water's edge.
The centre is laid out in short, regular blocks close to the coast, with civic buildings and the main commercial streets gathered in a small, walkable area.
Inland, the ground climbs towards the Mount Malindang range, and the road network fades into scattered routes that lead up towards upland farms and villages.
