Panagyurishte lies in the Sredna Gora mountains of central Bulgaria, in Pazardzhik Province. It holds an important place in the country's history as one of the main centres of the April Uprising of 1876, the revolt against Ottoman rule that preceded Bulgarian independence. The town has long kept that memory close, and it shapes much of its sense of identity.
Its name is also known well beyond Bulgaria because of the Panagyurishte Treasure, a set of Thracian gold vessels found near the town in 1949 and now counted among the finest surviving examples of Thracian craftsmanship. The treasure has travelled to exhibitions around the world, carrying the name of a modest mountain town with it.
