Le faʻafanua
Phuntsholing is Bhutan's main gateway from India, a commercial town in the Chukha District where the foothills of the Himalaya meet the plains. It borders the Indian town of Jaigaon, and the ornamental Bhutan Gate marks the crossing between them. For many travellers arriving by road, this is their first sight of the country, and its map shows the meeting of two very different landscapes.
The town is packed onto a narrow strip of flat land, with a tight grid of streets filling the space before the hills rise abruptly behind it. The Amo Chhu river runs along its western side in a broad, braided bed. From the edge of town, the road to Thimphu begins its long climb, drawing a switchback line up into the mountains.
At the centre stands the Zangtho Pelri Lhakhang, a temple representing the paradise of Guru Rinpoche, surrounded by commercial streets. A Phuntsholing map poster captures a remarkable contrast: the dense, orderly town on the plains, the open riverbed, and the sudden change of scale as roads turn into the mountains of Bhutan.
The town meets the Indian town of Jaigaon directly, and the street grids of the two places run together on the map with only the border between them.
The Amo Chhu runs along the town's western side in a wide, braided channel, creating a broad open shape that frames the dense streets.
The main highway into Bhutan leaves town in a series of tight switchbacks, climbing into the hills in a line that stands out on a minimal map.
