Le faʻafanua
Plymouth lies on the south coast of Devon, between the estuaries of the Tamar to the west and the Plym to the east. Both open into Plymouth Sound, a broad natural harbour sheltered by a long stone breakwater. From above, the city climbs north from a shoreline of inlets, docks and headlands, and water surrounds it on three sides.
The city centre was heavily bombed in the Second World War and rebuilt to a formal post-war plan. Its wide, straight axis runs from the railway station down toward the Hoe, the open green on the clifftop above the Sound. Beside it, the Barbican keeps the older, crooked street pattern of the medieval harbour, and the Devonport dockyards line the Tamar shore.
The Mayflower sailed from Plymouth in 1620, and according to legend, Francis Drake finished his game of bowls on the Hoe before sailing against the Armada. A Plymouth map poster shows the whole stage of that maritime history: the Sound, the breakwater, the naval yards and the bridges across the Tamar into Cornwall.

An open clifftop green overlooking the Sound, home to Smeaton's Tower, the red-and-white lighthouse. It links the city's formal centre with the sea.
The Tamar Bridge and the Torpoint ferry cross the river to Cornwall. They trace the boundary between two counties along the western edge of the city.

Aisea Plymouth
Plymouth means sailing, service and departures for a great many people, from naval families to students and descendants of emigrants. A map of the Sound and its shoreline marks that connection with the sea in a calm, lasting way.
