Le faʻafanua
Port Louis is the capital of Mauritius, on the northwest coast of the island. It was founded in the 1730s under the French governor Mahé de La Bourdonnais. On a map the town has a very clear shape. A sheltered harbour lies in front, a compact grid of streets fills the flat land behind it, and a ring of steep mountains closes the town in on the landward side.
Along the waterfront, the Caudan area and the docks give the shoreline its hard, angular edges. Aapravasi Ghat, the former immigration depot through which indentured labourers arrived, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Inland, the Champ de Mars racecourse, dating from 1812, makes a clear oval among the streets. The Citadel overlooks the centre from its hill.
A Port Louis map poster shows a whole capital in a single view, held between sea and mountains. The harbour basins, the colonial grid, the racecourse oval and the empty slopes behind the town each have their own clear shape, and they fit together into a striking composition.
Docks, the Caudan Waterfront and the historic Aapravasi Ghat line the bay. Their straight quays and basins give the map a hard, geometric edge.
The racecourse, in use since 1812, makes a distinct oval at the back of the grid, below the slopes of the mountains.
Steep ridges surround the town on its landward sides. The streets stop at their edge, and the empty slopes frame the whole composition.
