Le faʻafanua
Puerto Ayacucho sits on the east bank of the Orinoco, where the river runs through the Atures rapids. From above, the town's streets form a loose grid that ends at the water on one side and at rocky hills and forest on the other. Across the river is Colombia, so the map's broadest feature is also an international border.
The town is the capital of Amazonas state and a gateway to the Venezuelan Amazon. It grew because the rapids made the river impassable for boats, so goods and people had to move overland around the falls. This history shows on the map: roads follow the riverbank, and the town sits right beside the stretch of water that once stopped river traffic.
A Puerto Ayacucho map poster shows a small grid on the edge of a vast landscape. The Orinoco is wide and scattered with rocks and islands. Granite domes rise out of the forest around the town. In a minimalist style, the contrast between the few streets and the huge shapes of river and land makes a striking print.
The river runs down the western side of the map. It is broad, split by rocks and islands, and it separates Venezuela from Colombia at this point.
Just by the town, the river breaks into rapids. That is why the settlement exists here, and on the map the water becomes a busy pattern of channels.
A compact network of streets fills the space between the river and the hills. It is small and orderly against the wild landscape around it.
