Putten lies on the northwestern edge of the Veluwe in Gelderland, in the centre of the Netherlands, between the Veluwe woodlands and the lower land toward the Randmeren lakes. The map shows a compact village core with roads radiating outward, surrounded by residential districts and then a patchwork of farmland, hamlets and forest.
Putten holds a heavy place in Dutch memory. In October 1944, after a resistance attack nearby, German forces raided the village and deported hundreds of its men to concentration camps, most of whom did not return. The event is commemorated each year, and a memorial in the village marks the loss. Today the municipality is also known for holiday parks set among the woods.
