Le faʻafanua
Qingpu is Shanghai's westernmost district, and on a map it looks entirely different from the city centre. Water is everywhere. Canals, creeks and small lakes cross the land in a fine mesh, and roads often have to follow them or bridge them. Toward the west, Dianshan Lake opens as the largest body of fresh water in Shanghai, a broad, irregular shape that dominates that side of the district.
Zhujiajiao, one of the best-known old water towns near Shanghai, sits within Qingpu. Its lanes run beside canals, and the stone bridges show on the map as tiny links across narrow channels. At this scale the district's older settlements look much the same: small, dense knots of streets strung along the waterways, surrounded by fields, ponds and newer development.
The eastern part of Qingpu borders the Hongqiao area. It includes the huge National Exhibition and Convention Center, whose four-leaf outline is easy to spot from above. Expressways and metro lines cut west through the district toward Jiangsu and Zhejiang. A Qingpu map poster covers this full range, from canal towns to large-scale modern plans, with the lake as the anchor.

The old town's lanes and canals form a tight cluster of fine lines. Small bridges cross the channels at close intervals.
Creeks and canals cross almost every part of the district. The waterways form a delicate net that shows Qingpu's place in the Yangtze delta water country.

Aisea Qingpu
Qingpu suits anyone who lives in Shanghai's quieter west, has spent weekends by the lake, or walked the canals of Zhujiajiao. It is a map of Shanghai that feels green and watery rather than tall and dense.
