Le faʻafanua
São Vicente occupies the western part of São Vicente Island, which it shares with Santos, together with a large area on the mainland across the channel. On a map the island section is framed by water: open beaches facing the Atlantic, the sheltered São Vicente Bay, and narrow estuaries winding through mangroves. Dense streets fill the flat land between the hills and the shore.
Founded in 1532 by Martim Afonso de Sousa, São Vicente was the first Portuguese town established in Brazil. The Ponte Pênsil, a suspension bridge opened in 1914, links the island with the mainland and remains one of the city's best-known structures. Beaches such as Gonzaguinha and Itararé line the shore, and the small Porchat Island sits just off the coast.
A São Vicente map poster captures a coastline of unusual complexity, where beaches, rocky headlands, channels and hills interlock. The street grid fills every available flat space, while the water shapes the composition on several sides. It is a distinctive image for anyone connected to the Baixada Santista and to the place where Portuguese settlement in Brazil began.
The 1914 suspension bridge crosses the channel to the mainland, a slender line over the water that is one of the city's most recognisable features.
Curved beaches such as Gonzaguinha and Itararé, along with the sheltered bay, form a sequence of smooth arcs along the southern shore of the island.
Narrow estuaries and mangrove channels wind around the island and mainland districts, giving the western edges of the map a fine, branching texture.

Aisea São Vicente
São Vicente carries both personal and national meaning: family summers on the beach, homes near the bay, and a founding place in Brazilian history. Its map is a thoughtful piece for anyone who wants that coastline on the wall.
