Shixing is a county of Shaoguan, in the mountainous north of Guangdong province, close to the boundary with Jiangxi. Its main town occupies a valley floor, and from above the built-up area is long and narrow, held in place by green slopes. Streets run parallel to the river and the valley, with shorter cross streets reaching toward the hills on either side.
This part of Guangdong feels far removed from the dense urban grid of the Pearl River Delta. The map shows a smaller town with older lanes near the river and newer, wider blocks toward the edges, where residential districts have been laid out in recent decades. Roads and rail follow the valley too, taking the easiest route through the mountains.
The county is known for the Chebaling nature reserve, a protected area of subtropical forest in its hills, and for its Hakka heritage, shared with much of northern Guangdong.
