Le faʻafanua
Simunjan is a small town in the Samarahan Division of Sarawak, on the island of Borneo. It lies beside the Sadong River as the river winds across the lowlands toward the South China Sea. On a map the river dominates, looping through flat country, while the town forms a compact cluster of streets and buildings along its bank.
Like many Sarawak settlements, Simunjan grew as a river town, in a time when waterways were the main routes between the coast and the interior. The district was also one of the places where coal was mined during the colonial period. Roads now link it to the rest of the state, but the pattern of settlement still follows the water.
Lowland swamp, plantations and patches of forest spread out from the town in every direction, crossed by tributaries and a few roads. A Simunjan map poster captures this watery landscape: a small, tidy centre, the long meanders of the river and the open land beyond, drawn in fine black lines on a pale ground.
The broad river curves past the town in wide meanders. It is the strongest shape on the map and the historical reason Simunjan grew where it did.
Streets and buildings gather close to the bank, so the densest part of the town sits near the water and thins out further inland.
Flat country of swamp, farmland and forest surrounds the town, threaded with smaller streams that feed the river and add fine branching lines to the print.
