Le faʻafanua
Tomobe is a district of Kasama in central Ibaraki Prefecture, northeast of Tokyo. It was an independent town until 2006, when it merged with Kasama and Iwama. The area sits on flat to gently rolling ground west of Mito, and its built-up core is compact, with a denser pattern of streets around the station and houses dispersed along roads into the countryside.
Tomobe Station is the junction where the Mito Line meets the Joban Line, and the tracks draw strong diagonal lines across the map. Expressways also meet nearby at a large interchange. Around the town the landscape is a patchwork of rice fields, small woods and farmland typical of the northern Kanto plain. The wider Kasama area is known for its pottery tradition, Kasama ware.
A Tomobe map poster works as a portrait of a small rail town in the Japanese countryside. The railway lines converge near the centre, the expressways cut broad curves through the fields, and the irregular pattern of farm roads fills the rest of the frame. It is a restrained, detailed composition that rewards a closer look.
The Joban and Mito lines meet at Tomobe Station, and their converging tracks form the most distinctive lines on the map, pointing toward Mito in one direction and Oyama in another.
Major expressways meet at a junction near Tomobe, their wide sweeping curves contrasting with the fine grid of local roads and paddy boundaries.
Rice fields and patches of woodland surround the built-up area, forming a soft mosaic of small plots around the town centre.

Aisea Tomobe
For someone who grew up in Tomobe, commuted from its station or has family in Kasama, the map gives a clear and personal image of a place that no longer exists as a separate town. It is a subtle way to keep that name alive.
The title, subtitle and coordinates line can be changed to show a date, a name or the old town name. Choose one of five styles, Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand, and get HD files without watermark or a printed poster.
