Le faʻafanua
Tsuruga sits at the head of Tsuruga Bay, where a sheltered inlet of the Sea of Japan reaches far inland. On a map the city fills a narrow coastal plain. The harbour and its quays lie to the north, a compact grid of streets runs back towards the station, and forested hills rise quickly on the eastern and western edges. From above, the shape is simple: water in front, mountains behind, and the town between them.
That position made Tsuruga an important port for centuries. It was one of the shortest links between the Sea of Japan and the Kyoto and Lake Biwa region. In the early twentieth century, ships from Vladivostok connected here with the Trans-Siberian route to Europe. In 1940 and 1941 the port received Jewish refugees travelling on transit visas issued by the diplomat Chiune Sugihara, and that history is now remembered locally.
A Tsuruga map poster shows the curve of the bay and the Tsuruga Peninsula to the north, and the dark shoreline of the Kehi no Matsubara pine grove. Rail lines follow the flat ground and meet near the centre. Since 2024 that has included the Hokuriku Shinkansen, which now ends here. In black and white the balance between sea, plain and slope is easy to read.

A pine grove along the beach west of the harbour, counted among Japan's celebrated pine-lined shores. On the map it reads as a band of green edging the bay.
Conventional lines and the newer Shinkansen tracks meet on the flat ground near the centre. Their lines tie the port to the valleys running inland.

Aisea Tsuruga
Tsuruga suits anyone with ties to Fukui, anyone who travelled the Hokuriku line, or anyone who knows the port's refugee story. The bay-and-hills shape works well in a small frame and also holds up at 24×36″.
You can set your own title and subtitle, change the coordinates line to a meaningful address, and pick from Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. Download the HD files for $9, or order a matte print with an optional wooden frame.
