Tübingen is built on a ridge between two rivers. The Neckar runs along the south side of the old town and the smaller Ammer along the north. On a map the historic centre is a tight knot of crooked lanes climbing toward Hohentübingen Castle on the Schlossberg. Newer districts spread out along the valleys and up the surrounding slopes.
The Neckar is the town's best-known line. A long, narrow island divides the river in front of the old town, planted with a straight avenue of plane trees, and the riverside houses face it across the water.
