Le faʻafanua
Valera fits its terrain. The city runs along a valley in the Venezuelan Andes of Trujillo state, following the valley floor between rivers and ridges. On a map this gives it an elongated shape. Long parallel avenues run down the valley, and shorter cross streets break off as the ground starts to rise.
Although it is not the state capital, Valera has long been the main commercial centre of Trujillo. Roads from the lowlands and the high Andes meet here. Its nickname, the City of the Seven Hills, refers to the high ground that surrounds the centre. Neighbourhoods spread up those slopes, and the street pattern loosens and curves as it climbs.
A Valera map poster shows a city shaped by its valley. A regular core sits on the flat land, while the edges become more irregular where the streets follow the contours of the hills. The avenues running along the valley act like a spine. Printed in black and white, the city looks like a long, narrow figure framed by empty mountain land.
The main avenues follow the length of the valley floor and hold the city together. Most of the commercial centre lies along this north–south line.
Neighbourhoods climb the slopes around the centre. There the orderly blocks give way to winding streets that follow the terrain.
Beyond the last streets the map opens into mountain country. This sets clear limits on how far the city can spread.
