Vittorio Veneto is in the province of Treviso, where the Venetian plain meets the first slopes of the Prealps. The city was created in 1866 by merging two older towns, Ceneda to the south and Serravalle to the north. It was named after King Victor Emmanuel II. On the map you can still see two historic centres, connected by a long band of later development.
Serravalle sits in a narrow gap where the valley closes in, with an old centre squeezed between steep slopes and the Meschio river. Ceneda opens onto flatter ground. The city's name became famous in 1918, when the Battle of Vittorio Veneto brought the Italian front of the First World War to an end.
