Le faʻafanua
Waltrop lies at the northern edge of the Ruhr, in the district of Recklinghausen, where the dense industrial landscape begins to give way to the farmland of the Münsterland. The town centre is compact, with a small historic core and residential districts spreading outward along main roads, and a large share of the municipal area is still open fields and woodland.
Water defines the map. The Dortmund-Ems Canal passes through the municipality, and close by it meets other canals of the region's waterway network, so broad, straight channels cut across the landscape in several directions. Their geometry, with long lines, locks and basins, contrasts clearly with the organic pattern of the old town and its surrounding lanes.
Waltrop is known for the Henrichenburg ship lift, opened in 1899 to raise canal boats between levels and now part of an industrial heritage museum. A former colliery site in the town has also been converted to new uses. A Waltrop map poster shows this landscape of canals, locks and quiet streets, where the Ruhr's industrial story meets open country.
The old ship lift and the newer lift and lock beside it form a cluster of canal basins and channels, one of the most recognisable waterway structures in Germany.
The Dortmund-Ems Canal and its connections cross the area in long, deliberate strokes across the fields, giving the print a clear engineered framework.
The compact centre sits among open fields and woodland, so the poster balances dense residential streets with generous areas of quieter countryside.
