Yas Island lies off the coast of Abu Dhabi, northeast of the main city island, and has been developed as a leisure destination since the late 2000s. From above it looks nothing like an old town. Wide highways, sweeping ramps and interchanges curve around large, self-contained sites, and mangrove channels and shallow water fill the edges between the island and the mainland.
The best-known shape on the map is the Yas Marina Circuit, which has hosted the Formula One Abu Dhabi Grand Prix since 2009. The track bends around a marina, and a hotel straddles the course.
