Āz̄arshahr is in East Azerbaijan Province in northwestern Iran, southwest of Tabriz. The town sits in the zone where the slopes of the Sahand massif meet the flat land running toward Lake Urmia. On a map, its streets are drawn along that gradient, with orchards and fields spread across the lower ground and higher terrain to the east.
The area is known for stone. Quarries around Āz̄arshahr produce travertine, including distinctive reddish varieties, used in building across Iran and abroad. Farming matters too, and fruit orchards line the irrigation channels leaving town. The town's layout combines an older, irregular centre with straighter newer streets laid out as it expanded.
