Bretten lies in the Kraichgau, the rolling hill country between Karlsruhe and Heilbronn. From above, its historic core is easy to spot: a compact, roughly oval old town where the line of the former walls still shapes the streets, with the market square at its centre. The small Saalbach river runs through the valley below, and newer districts climb the surrounding slopes.
The town is best known as the birthplace of the reformer Philipp Melanchthon. The Melanchthonhaus stands on the market square in his memory. Every summer the Peter-und-Paul-Fest recreates the siege of 1504 with costumes and encampments throughout the old town. Beyond the edge of the town, the map opens onto farmland, orchards and wooded hilltops dotted with villages that are part of the municipality.
