Ditzingen lies just northwest of Stuttgart in the district of Ludwigsburg, where the city's suburbs give way to farmland. The small river Glems runs through the town in a shallow valley, and the historic centre sits beside it, with a castle and churches close together. Around this core, later housing areas spread across the slopes, and larger industrial blocks occupy the edges near the main roads.
The town is best known as the headquarters of Trumpf, a family-owned maker of machine tools and industrial lasers that operates worldwide. Ditzingen also includes the villages of Heimerdingen, Hirschlanden and Schöckingen, each with its own compact core surrounded by fields, so the municipality forms a cluster rather than one continuous built-up area.
